Are you interested in seeing one of the most unusual natural attractions in Spain? The Torrevieja salt lakes with their bright pink waters are a stunning sight and something quite different from the usual beach activities on the Costa Blanca.

They’re completely free to visit and make for some amazing photos!
What are the Torrevieja salt lakes?
The Torrevieja salt lakes are two large lagoons that produce over 600,000 tonnes of salt each year. There’s a pink lake (Laguna Rosa) and a green lake (Laguna Verde) – both with their striking colours coming from the pigments of the Halobacterium bacteria and a Dunaliella Salina (a micro-algae) both which live in very salty environments.
The pink lake is what most visitors come to see, as that Instagram-worthy pink hue looks almost unreal in person.
How to get to the Torrevieja salt lakes
The salt lakes are easy to find, sitting right on the edge of Torrevieja town. You’ll find them less than 10 minutes drive from the town centre.
If you’re driving, simply head towards Avenida de las Salinas and you’ll see the pink waters. There’s free parking available along several spots around the lakes.
The other lake (Laguna salada de la mata) can be found more to the north:
You can also easily reach the lakes by local bus from Torrevieja centre, or it’s about a 30-minute walk if you fancy stretching your legs.
Best time to visit Torrevieja’s salt lakes
The lago rosa lake is at its most pink during the hot summer months (July and August), when higher temperatures and increased evaporation intensify the colour. That said, it maintains its unique pink shade year-round, just slightly less vibrant in winter.

I’d recommend visiting early morning or late afternoon to avoid the strongest midday heat, particularly if you’re planning to walk around the area. Make sure to take some water with you and any other essentials.
For flamingo spotting, the best months are March to May and September to November during migration seasons. During these periods, you might see hundreds of flamingos gathering in the shallow waters. Early mornings are your best bet for viewing them when the area is quieter.
Swimming rules at Torrevieja’s salt lakes
Swimming in the salt lakes is strictly prohibited, and you can be fined up to 6000 Euros if you’re caught.
The good news is that there are plenty of lovely beaches in Torrevieja just a few minutes away in Torrevieja if you want to cool off with a swim after your visit.

There’s a walking path that goes around parts of the pink lake. The full loop is about 3km and offers amazing views across the water. It’s flat and easy, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll.

When walking around, please stick to the marked paths to protect the natural habitat. This is an important ecological area, so take any litter with you when you leave – there aren’t many bins around, so bring a bag for your rubbish.
Flamingo spotting
The salt lakes attract flocks of flamingos who feed on the tiny shrimp that live in the salty water. Bring binoculars if you have them for the best views.
Take photos of the pink water
Let’s be honest – most people come here for the photos! The contrast between the white salt piles, pink water and blue sky makes for stunning pictures. There are several viewing spots that are perfect for photography.
